Science Laboratory Technician/Senior Sub-school Administrative Assistant

(SSO1 Level)

SSO1 - Level 1;  Time fraction is 1.0 EFT;  Employment is termed 48/52

Position Description

The role involves a variety of tasks at the College that support teachers and students.  Generally, the position provides general laboratory support by assisting in the setting up and conducting of experiments.  This involves the handling and storage of chemicals and ensuring the laboratory and equipment is maintained in a clear and orderly state.  It is acknowledged that whilst this position does not require formal qualifications, an appointee must have knowledge in respect to laboratory operations.  The basic knowledge would normally be gained by having successfully completed VCE subjects which include maths and science.

It is also expected that the officer undertakes other support work within the school which is consistent with that of SSO1.  Administrative support in the Senior Sub-school and advice to staff and referred students relating to post school options, school based apprenticeships, vocational education and training and traineeships will be included.  This work may involve working independently using a range of technologies including computers and other information and communications technologies.  Liaison with other agencies such as the GMLLEN (Goulburn Murray Local Learning and Employment Network); The Apprenticeship Factory and VET Cluster may also be included.

The College will ensure that appropriate training is provided to support these other duties.

 Specific Duties

·                    Perform tasks in preparation for science practical classes including setting up and clearing away equipment, materials and chemicals.

·                    Ensure an adequate supply of laboratory materials and equipment by maintaining a data base

            stock, ordering and checking supplies and attending to faculty equipment.

·                    Assist science teaching staff with appropriate safety measures, collection of off campus materials, record keeping, clerical duties, field and laboratory tests.

·                    Provide support to other key learning area co-ordinators (science duties the priority) when and where appropriate and particularly in regard to OH&S record keeping eg MDA (Material Data Sheets).

·                    Effectively managing the distribution of career information to students and staff.

·                    Working with the Senior Sub-school Leadership Team in a variety of clerical tasks.

·                    Administrative support in the Senior Sub-school and advice to staff and referred students relating to post school options, school based apprenticeships, vocational education and training and traineeships will be included.  This work may involve working independently using a range of technologies including computers and other information and communications technologies.  Liaison with other agencies such as the GMLLEN (Goulburn Murray Local Learning and Employment Network); The Apprenticeship Factory and VET Cluster may also be included. along with dissemination of information to the Senior Sub School leaders. 

·                    Managing the second hand book sales process during periods at the commencement and conclusion of the year.

·                    Duties assigned by the Principal appropriate to school services officer level.
